Sweet Victory: Monroe Coach, Sean Field, Welcomes Baby on Same Day Team Wins

MONROE, NJ — Sean Field, the head baseball coach at Monroe High School, experienced a day that brought together two of life’s greatest joys: becoming a father and capturing a huge playoff victory. Emotions ran high as Field balanced the demands of parenthood and coaching, ultimately leading his team to a thrilling win over Old Bridge in the NJSIAA Central Group 4 playoffs.

The day began with eager anticipation as Field’s wife, Amy, went into labor. Their baby boy was born at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune on Friday afternoon at 1:45 p.m. With the playoff matchup against Old Bridge scheduled for 5:00 p.m., Field had to move quickly—supporting his wife and newborn son before racing back to the dugout to take charge of his team.

“I couldn’t leave until she had the baby,” Field said. “To put it in baseball terms, I made sure we had a safe delivery, and then I took off.” His love and devotion to both his family and his team were clear as he rushed out of the hospital. After a 30-minute drive up Route 18—Field admitted he might have pressed the accelerator a little too hard—he arrived just twenty-five minutes before Monroe’s infield and outfield warm-ups.

In the parking lot at Fred Cole Field, Field changed into his uniform of white pants, black pullover, and black cap, swiftly shifting his focus to the game ahead. Despite running on no sleep and skipping a shower, he was ready to lead his squad.

The emotional ups and downs of the day played out in a game full of twists and turns. Fifth-seeded Monroe pulled off a thrilling 6-5 upset over top-seeded Old Bridge, punching their ticket to Monday’s sectional final at Jackson Memorial. Exhausted but exhilarated, Field was carried by adrenaline and the satisfaction of his personal and professional achievements.

“It’s been a while since I’ve slept,” he said after the game. “We’re playing for a state championship, so who cares if I haven’t showered in a long time? Honestly, I’m just happy.” The victory stood as a testament to Field’s perseverance, dedication, and the support of his family.

Brady, Field’s newborn son, is doing well, bringing joy to the family. Brady joins big sister Emilia, age 4, as the couple’s second child. Field called his wife “the player of the game” and expressed deep gratitude for her. Reflecting on the whirlwind day with humor and thankfulness, he acknowledged his wife’s incredible support. “I basically begged her to let me go to the game today, and she was like, ‘I can’t really tell you yes or no because I know you’re just going to go,’” Field said. “I haven’t slept in like 36 hours and haven’t showered in probably 48 hours. I hugged my son and left.”

Sean Field’s day is a story of commitment, love, and resilience. By balancing the birth of his child with coaching a playoff game, Field showed extraordinary devotion to both his family and his team. Monroe’s victory, combined with Brady’s arrival, created an unforgettable day—proof of the incredible highs life can offer.
